Name: Jyap
Hometown: ChiangRai
Before coming to Gateway
Family background
I am from ChiangRai and I live in Pasanggan village. I am a cheerful and easy-going person and I can get along well with others.
There are now three members in my family, my mother, younger sister and I, as my father died when I was very young. Both my younger sister and my mother are currently unwell and our family income is very low.
Before coming to Gateway, I helped my mother with the housework and taking care of my younger sister. During the weekends I looked after the buffaloes while my mother took on other farm work to earn wages. I wanted to be able to bring my mother and sister to the doctor so that they can have the chance to get well but I did not have the means nor the knowledge or ability to help them.
Aspirations and goals in life
I want to be a music teacher teaching Lanna music. I like local music and would like to pass it on to future generations. I can now play the flute and I would like to play other Thai instruments and various types of folk music. Here at GateWay Connection I have the opportunity to learn music and to play the guitar. I love music and the sound of music is therapeutic as it can bring healing to the listener.
As a teacher, I can have the means to earn the money needed to provide medical care for both my mother and sister. I would like to see them recover from their ailments.
An update on Jyap
Jyap joined GateWay Connection in 2007 and commenced Secondary 1 at a high school in Chiang Mai. Jyap has done well in her studies since then and her best subject is Chinese. Jyap has also developed an interest in science and maths. Jyap sat for entrance exams at the end of Secondary 3 to allow her to study Secondary 4 to 6 at one of Chiang Mai's top schools.
Jyap attests to God's grace and favour in her life when she tells of how God opened the door for her to study at this school. When she received her results for the entrance exams, Jyap discovered that her marks were slightly less than what was required for the science-maths stream that she had applied for and she was not offered a place. During this time, Jyap was very stressed, anxious and confused about not being accepted into the school, and worried about which school she would go to and how she would make new friends there. However, Jyap's teachers at Gateway reminded her to rest in God and believe that He had a plan for her life. Also during that time, the pastor at the church Jyap attends also preached about resting in God and having faith in Him. This softened Jyap's heart and she was able to trust God with her future. Jyap thanks God that after the school learnt about her activities at GateWay, Jyap was eventually informed that she had been accepted into the school.
Jyap still likes music but now prefers Christian and pop music to the traditional Lanna music. She is still learning music at Gateway, where she practices playing the guitar and has started learning basic drumming. Jyap likes to play for people to help them to worship God and is now serving in children’s church.
Jyap is a fun-loving girl who loves to laugh and sees the funny side of life. She brings much joy to the Gateway community.
