Name: Renu
Hometown: ChiangRai
Before coming to Gateway
Family background
My family is small and poor. I am an orphan. I have never met my father and my mother died when I was 9 years old. My grandparents raised me since I was born. My grandmother died recently and my grandfather is now very old and is in poor health.
Before coming to GateWay, I helped with the housework and also with looking after my aged grandfather. During the school holidays, I tried to look for work so that I could help my family financially. When my grandfather was unwell, I had to miss school to look after him and bring him to the hospital.
My cousin kindly helped to pay for my school fees, which were in addition to looking after his own family. I tried to be disciplined and to do well in my studies though I was told to do a science course that I had no aptitude for.
Aspirations and goals in life
I believe in the value of a good education and will do my very best to attain the highest academic qualifications possible.
My desire is to be a clothes designer. I would like to promote Thai silk and other Thai made materials internationally. I hope to develop my skills overseas and to have my own business eventually.
An update on Renu
Renu joined GateWay Connection in 2006 and commenced Secondary 4 at a high school in Chiang Mai. She studied hard to complete high school and subsequently was offered a place by a University in Chiang Mai to study a Bachelor of Arts majoring in Business English.
Renu's course involves learning to use English in a business context. This is teaching her how to work with and translate for English speaking foreigners. Renu enjoys her studies because learning English in this capacity opens up the world to Renu and, in particular, gives her a greater knowledge of the English-speaking world. Renu is currently doing quite well in her studies but hopes to improve her results in the next year. She is aiming to achieve an award when she completes her degree.
While studying, Renu is also currently working at the university, obtaining valuable experience working in an office doing administrative tasks. Renu is greatly trusted by her colleagues and has been given a lot of responsibility. Renu really thanks God for this job. She notes that this is an ideal job for her because it is very safe and she has teachers to help her when necessary. Renu shares that since she started working there, her teachers have kindly provided her with lunch on a regular basis, allowing Renu to save money. Renu has had opportunities to share with colleagues in the office about Jesus, as they see a difference in her life and want to know why.
Renu hopes to study fashion design in the future. As a course is not currently available, Renu practices drawing on her own and is compiling a portfolio of designs that she can use in the future.
Renu notes that being at GateWay has changed her life a lot! When she first arrived, Renu remembers struggling to control her emotions due to having experienced many losses in her life. However, when she came to GateWay, Renu learned that Jesus is love, that God is her Father, and that He is everything to her. She learned that He is greater than all the losses she has experienced, and that God could help her through any problem she faced. In the past 4 years, Renu feels that she has changed lot. She has learned more skills to use in her life, predominantly skills to talk with, help, and understand others better.
Renu is an inspiration to many, both within the GateWay community and in her wider circle of friends.
