Name: Tay
Hometown: ChiangRai
Before coming to Gateway
Family background
There are seven children in my family. Being the oldest girl I had to help my mother with the housework and also to work in the fields planting rice and corn. As such, I could only go to school about three times a week. Although I liked school, my studies suffered as I could not catch up with my class work. On weekends I had to do odd jobs in order to save money. There was also problem with alcoholism in my family, which required me to take on more responsibilities within the family.
Aspirations and goals in life
I like to study and I want to have a good education so that I can be the breadwinner for my family and to provide my younger siblings with the opportunity of an education and for them to attain a bright future.
I would like to be a teacher and I want to teach the Thai language and also physical education as I like sports. I want to teach children to have a good mind and a strong healthy body.
An update on Tay
Tay joined GateWay Connection in 2006 and commenced Secondary 1 at a high school in Chiang Mai. When she first arrived, Tay's studies were poor and she was unable to speak English at all. Tay also felt that she did not have many skills, having not been exposed to much of the world.
Since being at Gateway, Tay feels that she has learned a lot and her life has been changed in many ways. She is now able to communicate in English confidently and has even done translation work for overseas teams that come to Chiang Mai for ministry purposes. Tay has also learned many new skills, such as leadership, teamwork, relating to people for different cultures, music and tutoring, and has gained a broader perspective of the world around her. Tay also feels that her time at Gateway has allowed her to know God better. She knew about God before coming to Gateway, but Tay says that she is now able to trust Him with her life.
A strong testimony of this is when Tay decided that she wanted to sit for the entrance exams for one of the top schools in Chiang Mai at the end of Secondary 3. Tay prayed that God would help her and she praises God for enabling her to be accepted into that school to complete her Secondary 4 to 6 studies. In addition, Tay thanks God that He sent her a new friend on her first day at the new school. Her new friend was able to help Tay in the subjects that she required assistance with, as the standard of work at her new school was considerably higher than she was used to. Tay thanks God for providing not just what she asked for, but more!
Tay has excelled in her studies since then. Tay particularly enjoys Chinese and Social Studies, as she loves to learn about different cultures and share ideas with people from different places.
Tay now wants to become a Chinese teacher to enable more Thais to communicate with Chinese-speaking visitors and to facilitate a better exchange of information between the cultures. Tay hopes that this will allow the Gospel of Jesus Christ to reach more people in the world.
Tay is a hard-worker, a willing helper, and is widely respected by all in the Gateway community.
